You might remember the old-fashioned way of doing flat roofs with a smelly kettle of boiling tar, but thankfully, things have moved on. We specialise in torch-on felt, which is a much more robust and flexible solution. It involves using a high-performance bitumen-based material that we heat with a torch to create a permanent, watertight bond. It's perfect for the temperature swings we get here in West Yorkshire, as the material can expand and contract without cracking. Have you noticed small splits or 'alligatoring' on your current roof? That's usually a sign the old material has become brittle. Upgrading to a modern system means you won't have to worry every time a storm rolls in from the Aire Valley.

We don't believe in doing a half-hearted job, which is why we usually recommend a proper three-layer system. First, we lay down a vapour control layer to stop moisture from inside your house getting into the roof structure. Then comes a reinforced felt underlay, followed by the star of the show: the mineral cap sheet. This top layer is finished with tiny slate granules that protect the bitumen from the sun's UV rays, which is what usually causes cheaper roofs to fail. By the time we're finished, you've got a thick, durable shield over your head. It’s a bit like putting on a high-quality waterproof jacket rather than a cheap plastic poncho—it just does the job better and lasts a lot longer.

Ever looked out of your upstairs window after a downpour and seen a mini lake sitting on your flat roof? That’s what we call 'ponding,' and it’s one of the biggest enemies of any flat roof. If water sits there for days, it puts immense pressure on the seams and can eventually find its way into your decking or substrate. When we come out for a free survey, we don’t just look at the felt; we check the timber underneath to make sure everything is structurally sound. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of clever work with the upstands and flashings to get that water moving towards the gutters again. We’d much rather help you fix a small drainage issue now than see you have to deal with a rotten ceiling six months down the line.

Most homeowners we speak to are surprised to learn that if you're replacing more than 25% of your flat roof, you need to comply with Building Regulations (specifically Part L). This usually means looking at your insulation. If your extension feels like a fridge in the winter and a greenhouse in the summer, it’s probably because the old insulation isn't up to scratch.
